As a research-based project, the greatest challenge was putting aside my personal assumptions to focus on data-driven design. It was fun to see how my ideas molded throughout the research process, ultimately leading me to design a feature that was more relevant to HelloTalk and language learners.
The language learning & exchange app, HelloTalk, boasts over 20 million users worldwide. However, everyone I had personally spoken to about the app no longer used it. My question: WHY? I wanted to design a new feature which would improve the experience to help HelloTalk better maintain its users.
Research and discover opportunities to improve the performance of the HelloTalk app. Design a new feature that embeds within the current app and in the IOS operating system.

From the user interviews & survey results, I discovered what other language learning apps people commonly use. I downloaded each app and tested them to be inspired as well as make a list of pros & cons for each.
I created these two personas to embody what I was hearing, particularly listening to the common responses from the survey. In the end, “The Socialite” became the main persona I designed for.

HelloTalk’s color scheme in their app was minimal with primarily light blue, purple, grey & white utilized. I wanted to introduce some more colors for the badge system which would elevate their friendly brand message.
For the style of the badges I kept with their minimalist scheme, while incorporating the classic HelloTalk smile whenever I could. I also wanted to create more visual interest throughout the app by adding dimensionality to the screens.

For this project, I tried out a testing program called Maze to reach a larger audience. In addition to the Maze results, I held two moderated tests with HelloTalk users. I gained some valuable feedback and overall received a very positive reaction towards the new feature! :)
